I spoke with Dawn Murphy about her fantastic book, China’s Rise in the Global South: The Middle East, Africa, and Beijing’s Alternative World Order (Stanford University Press, 2022).
Dawn was an early observer of the importance of the Global South in China’s foreign policy agenda, and with the Global Development/Security/Civilization Initiatives, and the expansion of BRICS and SCO, it’s clear that there’s more than a concept of a plan here. China has been putting a lot of effort into developing this strategy, and it has been effective. Dawn’s book is a great overview of the how and why, and I highly recommend it.
